Overview

Surgical removal of a kidney from a living donor for transplantation into a recipient with end-stage renal disease.

Indications

Living related or unrelated kidney donation, ABO compatible or incompatible transplant programs.

Procedure Details

The donor kidney is carefully dissected preserving vascular and ureteric length. Laparoscopic approach is preferred for faster donor recovery.

Recovery

Hospital stay 2-4 days (laparoscopic) or 5-7 days (open). Return to work in 2-4 weeks.

Risks & Considerations

Bleeding, injury to adjacent organs, wound complications, long-term single kidney function.
