Overview

PCNL is a minimally invasive procedure where a small tract is created through the skin into the kidney for removal of large stones.

Indications

Renal stones >2cm, staghorn calculi, stones in anatomical variants, failed URS/RIRS.

Procedure Details

Under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance, a percutaneous tract is created. A nephroscope is used to visualize and fragment stones with ultrasonic or laser lithotripsy. Can be performed in prone or supine position.

Recovery

Hospital stay 2-4 days. Return to activities in 1-2 weeks.

Risks & Considerations

Bleeding, injury to adjacent organs, sepsis, residual stones, need for nephrostomy.
